The state of Pennsylvania is situated in the North-eastern and Mid-Atlantic area of the United States of America. Bordering Maryland and Delaware to the south, New York and Canada to the north, Ohio to the west and New Jersey to the east, the state of Pennsylvania was once home to native American tribes called the Lenni Lenape (the Delaware), the Iroquois, Shawnee, Eriez and Susquehannock among others. The four largest cities are Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Allentown and Erie, but the state capital is Harrisburg. The first European settlers were Dutch and English, with the Dutch being the first to take possession of the rich lands, making them part of their commonwealth of countries around the globe. However, much of the state is rural countryside. The largest private employers are retailer Wal-Mart and the University of Pennsylvania. Last year the unemployment rate across the state stood at 8.8% of national average. Thanks to its rural landscape agriculture is still one of the USA’s major producers with mushrooms, Christmas trees and chicken farms making up the premier source of income followed by milk products, corn and grapes, both for juice and winemaking. Further revenue comes from legalized casino gambling with nine casinos already operating and a further three being planned.
